Butterflied Lover: Ep 1-2
notes: Spoilers! Master list of all recaps
You know, communication is so important in a marriage. If you're a demonic poison butterfly with a thirst for human blood, you owe it to your partner to be honest and disclose that sort of thing. It's basic respect, people!
.
It’s another bright sunny morning for Tang Qianyue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She owns a successful rouge shop and has a doting husband- the very handsome military general Ling Changfeng.
Tumblr media
marry me
But Tang Qianyue has a secret. She may not be as human as she first appears.
Tumblr media
Well, Ling Changfeng, that's what you get when you marry the only survivor of a village that was slaughtered by the evil, poison-loving Butterfly Clan. C'mon guy, didn't you ever see Painted Skin?
Tang Qianyue and her husband go out to enjoy the lantern festival but their date night is ruined by the murderous Butterfly Clan who have disguised themselves as the Hua Cheng Dancers, right down to the silver butterfly masks, bells and red umbrellas.
Tumblr media
In the ensuing fracas, Tang Qianyue is attacked (or is she?) and when Ling Chanfeng comes to her rescue she helps herself to his jugular. Ouch!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But it turns out that was all just a bad dream... or was it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
suspicion intensifies (but where did the bite on his neck go?)
Who else is in this?
Wang Ruolin, whom you may remember as the world's worst sugar daddy Zhao Jing from Word of Honor.
Smile Hu as Si Xiaonian and Yang Ze as Yan Wuming from The Killer Is Also Romantic because they are reprising their roles! It's set in the same universe!
The Good
I already wrote a recap for The Killer Is Also Romantic and it's here.
This is great- spooky, atmospheric and the plot is really interesting so far.
The music is surprisingly good
The Bad
Episodes are only 20 min long and there are only 22 of them.
Final Note
Tumblr media
I bet this will come up in couple’s counseling

I finished Butterflied Lover which was for me very unexpected all the way through. I went into believing it was simply a sweet romance and was blown away by the first two eps. I mean probably could have read the description of the show and had some idea but I didn't because I almost never do.
Tumblr media
And it was a sweet romance, just not like any I've seen before and with a lot of, ummmm, weird monster magic and moral uncertainty?
It was incredibly short by most cdrama standards, 22 eps about 15 mins long. Which in itself was refreshing. It managed a variety of tone changes and a good amount of tension in that short time. And also a lot of sweet romance. Plus one of the steamier love scenes I've seen in a cdrama.
Tumblr media
The leads and the larger cast were all excellent and succeeded in making the story intensely emotional even in the short time they had to establish everything. The secondary romance was surprisingly moving given the set up for it. Very good character development there. And interesting too, since the main couple's story is mostly is mostly about maintaining who they truly are. The sets and costumes were also excellent. It seems weird but I liked how small the domestic life was compared to most big palace or mansion dramas, and how much of domestic life took place outdoors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I really enjoyed this, but I'm not sure what to say about the ending. From a satisfying storytelling perspective it seems like it needs another ep between 21 and 22 to wrap everything up. But we don't get that, and instead it's somewhat nebulous in that I think each watcher can interpret the ending (I read several other people's interpretations that I don't agree with). But I suppose that in itself is satisfying since you can decide what you personally need from the ending.
Tumblr media
Would recommend if you want something quick or you're looking for something a little different. Just be prepared for something of a choose-your-own-adventure ending.
Tumblr media
And I still think the translated title is terrible as I have since this first came on my radar.

DRAMA REVIEW | You Are Desire (2023)
From the very start I was very impressed with this drama. The first episode felt grounded in reality and presented all the main characters as young adults behaving like such but also with a level of maturity that felt respectful. Sometimes youth dramas don't know how to balance the growing pains, friendship and romance but You Are Desire does it perfectly.
Xia Feng Yan created a story with solid development based on actual growing from well rounded characters that act and react in ways that feel natural. I am amazed this is her first project and I will keep an eye on her because she has a bright future.
Deng Ke (My Huckelberry Friends) also started in the industry as a screenwriter before transitioning into directing, so it was a perfect fold for Xia's story. He understood the assignment and complemented the script with beautiful cinematography, camera movements and choice of cast.
This drama could have died in the hands of a lesser cast but Zhou Yiran and Zhuang Dafei carried the drama flawlessly. Most of the story centers around them and how they interact with others when loneliness has been a part of their young lives for a long time. The supporting cast were also at their best, each with their own lives and struggles which made them well rounded individuals and not an artifact to push the leads's story.
All of these elements created a beautiful group of people dealing with different experiences. A slice of life drama where we understand the world is not always fair and parents make mistakes; where people need to learn to grieve in a healthy way. That families can all look very different from each other and that's okay as long there's love. That you don't always pass the university exam and your workplace might suck. A world where you fall in love and support one another as you grow together with a clear understanding of each other. That life can be sweeter when you are surrounded of good people who truly appreciate you.
Overall, You Are Desire it's a wonderful story that enjoyed from the very first episode to the last one. Criminally underrated, for sure, as I don't understand how more people are not talking about what is probably one of 2023's best cdramas.

When I Fly Towards You
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
When I Fly Towards You (China, 2023)
Director: Mao Deshu
Writers: Yue An & Tao Kaixin (based on a novel by Zhu Yi)
Mini-review:
I think I'm a bit in love with this drama. It's funny, cause I didn't really vibe with the first few episodes and I almost dropped it. Thankfully, something just clicked at around episode 7 or 8, and from there it was wonderful. I finished this show feeling I had been there with these characters, like I was another member of their friend group, going through all those things with them. Do you know how difficult it is to create that sort of atmosphere and feeling? It's really hard to find something like that, so I couldn't help but treasure every second I spent with these characters. Seriosuly, there's something so warm and nostalgic and lovely about When I Fly Towards You. I feel like it will be a long while before I get over it, and that's the highest sort of praise I can think of.
P.S. I beg you, Chinese drama producers, stop spoiling the whole thing in the opening song video 😭😭😭

I am here to talk about my OCs!
Because @elianaroselight and I have talked about them so much we developed 4 RPs about them (that have been going for over a year now) and got a whole system going
Buckle up, it's long
First, there's Ju Ling's family, who now has 3 mates and 7 children (without counting the ones she lost). Her mates are Ju Jing the oni, Ri Shi and the white tiger of the west, Baihu. Her siblings are Hua and Ping, who have, respectively, the vermilion bird of the south, Zhuque, and the azure dragon of the east, Qinglong, as their mates.
Then there's Yue Shi and his mate Fengbao. Feng became friends with their doctor Jiahao, who had two twin kits that became friends (and enemies if you ask Shu) with Feng's kits. Jiahao's husband is Pingyi, who teaches sign language, and is friends with Ju Jing because he and his sister (name missing) were all at the same orphanage. Pingyi is also Cixin's teacher, Zan's adopted son. He's not mute or def but has trouble speaking and often communicates by repeating sounds or words (in the voice of the person that spoke them). Cixin and Tai Shi (one of Ju Ling's cubs) have pet ducks together.
The biological mothers of Tai Shi and the rest of the tiger cubs are Lan (who has Tai Shi, 2 tiger cubs that she lost, and Ju, a lynx cub she adopted) and An (who has Jingyi, Ling Min, Heng and Yawen) Tai Shi's dad is Qiong Qi, no one likes him. Baihu is the father of the other cubs. Depending on the AU, An and Lan are platonic mates with Ju Ling and the others and live in a huge ass house.
But anyway, Baihu is a big sweetheart who does his best to be a good baba. He loves seafood and spicy food and Ju Jing and Ri Shi very much feed into that. Lan grew a passion for gardening and plants and it was a great bonding moment for her and Ju Ling.
But anyway, all of An's cubs are adorable Jingyi likes plants and helps her moma with her garden. She even found a salamander once and wanted to keep it as a pet. Heng loves the sky and the sea, which works well with his uncle Ping, who works at an aquarium, and his yeye who used to be an astrologist. Yawen likes the sky, but specifically the clouds. He loves Wukong's nimbus and asks him to conjure it any time he comes over. And Ling Min is a little fighter that loves dragons and adores her gugu Mei.
Then there is Bai He's family. Obviously, her parents are the general Ba and Beng. Her wife is Zhi Hao, a gibbon demon the size of a wardrobe which works as a blacksmith. So you know, guaranteed thirst trap. Their children are Hua Mei, the oldest girl, Hao the only boy, and their twins Guiyin and Li Lei who is named after the empress of the kingdom of women, who Bai He is friend with.
There's also Kai Hu's group of friends! They call themselves the lost ones because Kai's cousin calls him Peter Pan. They are Chao a cat fish demon (not a catfish. a cat and fish demon), Juan a one-eyed cat demon, Fen a bunny demon, Bo the only human and Huangshu, a gibbon demon that was adopted into Kai's family and became his cousin.
And then there's Shu's group (she is one of Yue Shi and Fengbao's triplets kits), aka Lupin gang wannabe. Shu is of course Lupin, then we have Leale, a dog demon who is 100% based on Jigen, I'm not even going to hide that, and just discovered that he has 2 siblings, and Rampion, who was made as a joke with Skelle but he fits in this group of misfits. And I can't forget the Fujiko of the group, Junjie, who is also one of Jiahao's kits. The other one of Jiahao's kits is Xinyi who married Bao, Shu's second brother.
Last group that I can remember is Ling Min's family. Her mate is Hebo, a leopard gecko demon, and their adopted kids: Xu Qiu a dear and lion demon, Bian a they/them human, Hongbo an otter demon and Wuyue a baby lizard demon that Xu Qiu found in the snow

Nirvana in Fire Character Reference Sheet Roughly in the Order Those Characters Are Introduced
For @howdydowdy, as promised, and for anyone else who, like me, is terrible at names and needs some kind of “Who?? Ohhh right. That guy.” reminder.
Basically, my Nirvana in Fire Journey started with me watching half the first episode, being wildly confused, realizing I was in over my head re: names and thus deciding to go back to the beginning and watch it again But Taking Notes This Time. I watched the whole show with a notebook and pen at my side. I figured I may as well spare you all the labour by typing it up.
As more information was revealed, I often added it to a character’s initial note, but by and large I’m leaving those extra notes out so you can experience the joy and confusion and anguish of New Information yourself. The exception to this is generally a person’s name, title, and position. E.g. Duke Qing’s name, Bai Ye, isn’t mentioned until a number of episodes after he’s first mentioned, if I recall correctly, but knowing that the person named “Bai Ye” is the same person called “Duke Qing” is exactly why I took these notes for myself in the first place.
Basically this isn’t intended to be a character guide that lays out exactly who a person is, their relationships to the other characters, and their place in the story, but rather something you can look at whenever someone mentions a name that jogs your memory just enough for you to be able to place to person. Which is why the notes tend to be either the context in which the person was introduced or the relationship through which they’re introduced.
Some names and notes are inherently spoilers, but hopefully by virtue of the fact that this is broadly in the order a character is first mentioned/introduced, you can avoid spoilers simply by not scrolling down too far. For those persons where their name or an alter ego comes in significantly after their initial introduction and is a spoiler, they are listed a second time starting with the “new information” and with the note in italics indicating their original entry (there aren’t a lot of these, don’t worry).
I will readily admit that some of my handwritten notes are just a name and then a blank space because apparently I just never actually added a note for them. I haven’t bothered adding those people here. Yes it’s because I’ve forgotten entirely who they are, but I’m pretty sure that means you’ll be okay if you immediately forget who they are too. (That being said, I get the sense there are actually relevant people missing from this list. As the show carried on and introductions became less frequent, remembering them became less difficult.)
The List
Lin Xie –> Commander of the Chiyan Army
Lin Shu –> “Xiao-Shu” –> Lin Xie’s son –> Mei Changsu --> Chief of the Jiangzuo Alliance --> Su Zhe
Lin Chen –> Young Master of Langya Hall –> NOTE: The “Lin” of Lin Chen and the “Lin” of Lin Xie & Lin Shu are both written and pronounced differently. These people are not related.
Northern Yan’s 6th Prince –> Now Northern Yan’s Crown Prince
Minister Xu –> Da Liang’s envoy to Northern Yan
Prince Yu –> Xiao Jinghuan –> 5th Prince of Da Liang
Xiao Xuan –> Emperor of Da Liang
Empress Yan --> Prince Yu’s adoptive mother
Consort Yue --> Crown Prince’s mother
Grand Empress (Dowager) --> Emperor’s grandmother
Xiao Jingxuan --> Crown Prince of Da Liang --> metonym is “Eastern Palace”
Zhuo Dingfeng --> Master of Tianquan Manor
Zhuo Qingyao --> Eldest son of Zhuo Dingfeng --> guy on the horse and later the guy helping the old couple on the boat and later also the guy who calls Xie Yu “father-in-law” (I am telling you this specifically because I am not bad at faces but this guy added so much confusion to my life that was cleared up the moment I realized these people were the same person. And also because my mother is terrible at faces and for like 15 episodes every time he showed up in another random place I would say “that’s horse and boat guy” and she would say “wait what? really???” So I’m assuming at least one other person will share in this struggle)
Xie Yu --> Marquis of Ning
Qin Banruo --> Prince Yu’s strategist
Duke Qing --> Prime Minister --> Bai Ye

Note
So you’ve done your ideal roster for Shu, what about Wei, Wu, and other?
I have received a couple variations on this question.
For each faction I had to ask myself what story I’m trying to tell. Some characters are there because of their achievements; others are there because of the way they would act as foils to other characters. It’s also important to understand that in any given story, you’d see a lot of NPCs who also have importance.
Wei’s story is probably the most straightforward one. It’s all about the Cao’s conquests; pretty simple. Most of the characters are there to support that, while some are included for personal reasons.
Jin’s was the hardest to cut down, in large part because DW only gives them 13 characters and I decided to stick to that restriction. I decided that story would need to focus on the rise of the Sima family and their unification of the former Han empire. This ultimately meant that a lot of people who I wanted to make playable (like Dowager Guo and Xiahou Xuan) got cut - to keep the numbers limited most of the Sima family’s enemies got put in the NPC category. The remaining ones are the people I thought were absolutely essential to the overall narrative.
Wu’s was also very difficult. They also got less characters than Wei and Shu (though not as few as Jin) and have the longest continuous story to tell. While I originally considered restricting that story to a limited span of time that ultimately just didn’t satisfy me. So I focused on having a broad group of characters who could be used to tell every part of the kingdom’s story. Longevity was often an individual’s best friend.
For Others the question was which groups interacted with at least 2 of the 3 main factions. This immediately excluded a lot of groups (like the Nanzhong leaders or Liu Yao’s army); longevity was often a factor in choosing which individuals would best represent those groups. None of these were easy decisions; characters who could reasonably be put in this category but later joined one of the main factions were also favored.
I’m constantly second-guessing these lists, BTW. I’m always asking myself “Okay this person was IMPORTANT but is this a perspective we need to get the story from? Or could their importance be represented as an NPC? Why does this character need to be PLAYABLE instead of just important?” But that’s contradicted by the question of “Will this character actually seem appropriately important if they aren’t playable? Would I just be asking ‘If this person is so important why aren’t they playable?’ Is playability a measure of importance?”

They together with the Palace Attendant, the Grand Commandant Excellency Xi, and Supervisor of the Right of the Masters of Writing, the King of Rencheng, Cheng, and others were the six people to assist the government.
The backward looking instructions to the stewards and assistants said:
Verily, you, Grand Commandant, Minister of Works, Prefect of the Masters of Writing, Supervisors of the Left and Right, and Master of Writing of the Personnel Section, in particular our Grand Founder's legacy of magnificent majesty, together with the four majesties [?], equal in blossoming, amassed the sage' esteemed clarity, and assembled a vast succession among deficient and lacklustre.
Cautious and careful, fearful and frightened, [We] pondered and assembled thus the sage's neglectful tracks. [We] moved the capital to the Song Eminence, settled the tripods at the He and Chan, numerous times went south to wash away Ou and Wu, restoring to propriety to the ten thousand states, so as to look up to the brilliant seven temples, and bow down to help the blue-green life.
Hemmed in by adversity[ We] did not all the way through therefore make records. Excellencies and Dignitaries, should [you] excel at supporting the continuing son, prosper our House of Wei, is it not also good? [How] can [you] not put effort into it!
Summer, 4th Month, bingwu, New Moon [26 April], the Emperor collapsed at the Acting Palace of Gutang Source, at the time he was aged 33.
It was kept secret and hidden, when they arrived at Luyang they issued out the mourning, and turned back to the Imperial City. The Sovereign [venerated him with] the posthumous title Filial and Civil [xiaowen] August Emperor, and temple title Exalted Founder [gaozu].
5th Month, bingshen [15 June], he was buried at Changling [the “Long Mound”].
The Emperor as a young child had an extreme nature. When he was aged 4 sui, Xianzu once suffered from an abscess. The Emperor personally sucked out the pus himself. At 5 sui when he accepted the abdication, he wept sadly and was not able to surpass himself. Xianzu asked the Emperor about it, the Emperor said:
The feelings of replacing the parent on the inside cuts to the heart.
Xianzu considerably praised and marvelled at him.
Empress Dowager Wenming considered the Emperor's astute sageness later perhaps would not be advantageous to the Feng clan, and wanted to plan to depose the Emperor. Therefore in the cold month [she?] shut [him?] up in his room with a single set of clothes, and cut off the food for three mornings. She summoned the King of Xiangyang, Xi, and wanted to install him. Yuan Pi, Mu Tai, and Li Chong firmly remonstrated, and she therefore desisted. The Emperor at first was not resentful, but only was deeply gracious to Pi and others.
He comforted and kept in mind his various younger brothers, and from beginning to end never was sparing with assistance. He was genuinely friendly with the nine kin, his courtesy and respectfulness was altogether deep. Although with the great subjects he wielded the law and was not indulgent, he was by nature broad-minded and compassionate, and always was sympathetic and forgoing.
Those advancing with food once wounded the Emperor's hand with hot soup, and also once within the food he found worms and unclean things. In both cases he smiled and forgave them. The eunuchs [?] had previously slandered the Emperor to the Empress Dowager, the Empress Dowager was greatly angered and caned the Emperor several tens of times. The Emperor silently accepted it, and did not explain and clarify himself.
After the Empress Dowager collapsed, he likewise did not harden his mind [?]. When listening to and looking over government affairs, he never did not follow the good like [water] flows. He felt sympathy and compassion with the hundred families, and constantly pondered the means by which to aid and profit [them].
The rites of Heaven and Heart, the Five Suburbs, Ancestral Temples, and the Two Equinoxes [?], he  regularly and invariably personally [did] himself, and did not get bored with it due to cold or hot.
When the Masters of Writing put memorials on the table, he very much searched out and scrutinized [them] himself. Of the hundred officials, great and small, there was nothing he did not keep in mind, [but] he applied himself to the pervasive and universal. He always told:
In all cases, to be a lord of people is to be bothered with unfairness, and not being able to push forward sincerity in managing things. In all cases, to be a lord of people is to be bothered with unfairness, and not being able to push forward sincerity in managing things. If one always is able to be fair and sincere, the people of the Hu and Yue likewise can be intimate like brothers.
He regularly in idle indifference spoke to the history officials, saying:
Straightly write down the affairs of the times without concealing the state's ugliness. A lord of people's awesome beneficence derives from himself, [if] historians then do not write it down what might there be to afraid of?
On the southern and northern campaigns and tours, there were ministers memorialising to request the Way of government. The Emperor said:
Roughly repair arches and bridges, and in general with carriages and horses make convenient halts. It is not necessary to get rid of [?] the grass and scrape off to make it flat. In all cases when there are repairs or construction, [if it is] not possible to avoid it, then do it. Do not make affairs of what is not urgent diminish the people's strength.
When he toured to favour South of the Huai, and went to be inside [that] land, army affairs made it necessary to cut down people's trees, he invariably kept behind tabby silk so as to recompense them straightly. And people's rice plants and millet were without damage from trampling.
There variously were restrictions and prohibitions, and methods for warding off and suppressing that were not set down by the standard records, as one they were all removed and done away with.
He was elegant and excellent at reading books, his hands did not let go of the scroll. The Five Classics's right principles he adopted and readily discussed. When studying he did not follow what was accepted, [but] searched for their essence and inner recesses. Of the histories, traditions, and hundred schools, there was nothing he did not fully wade through. He was good at conversing about the Zhuang and Lao, and particularly focused on explaining their righteousness.
He had a talent for eloquence and was rich in diction, he excelled at making literal compositions. Poetry, rhapsodies, inscriptions and songs of praise, he had confidence in his mood and then made them. He had a great a literal brush, when on top his horse he gave oral conferrals, and when they were completed he did not change a single word. From the 10th Year of Taihe and afterwards, the decrees and records were all the Emperor's writings. His other literal compositions where more than a hundred chapters.
He was fond of and marvelled at excellent scholars, feeling like he was starving and thirsty. He received and admitted the court's worthies, followed talent in making light of or putting weight in [someone], and often relied hence on the thoughts of the plain and simple. He relaxedly strode forward in the dark [?], and did not consider the generation's pursuits to wrap around his heart.
Also as young he was good at shooting, and was physically strong. Aged ten sui, he was able to snap his fingers to break a goat's shoulder bones. And when he shot birds or beasts, he never did not follow with killing what he aimed for. Reaching aged fifteen, he readily did not again kill the living, the affairs of shooting and hunting completely stopped.
He was by nature frugal and simple, regularly dressed in clothes that were rinsed and washed, and his saddle and bridle were [made of] iron and wood, and that was all. The Emperor's refined aspirations were all of this kind.
Your Subject the Historian says: Wei at first was founded in Dai and Shuo, broadly pacified the Southern Xia, developing the region through the generations. Altogether they considered awesome martial ability as their legacy, the affairs of civil teachings there was not yet time to spare for.
Gaozu as a young child inherited the vast thread, and soon displayed the manners of an astute sage. At the time, since Wenming administered affairs, he loose and leisurely respected himself, mysteriously observed solitary possession, put forth himself and did not talk, a godly pact being signalled, firmly thereby a symbol for unseen transform.
Reaching him personally controlling the great government, in a single day there was ten thousand moments, and in the space of ten or so years made no allowance for leisure. Different paths had similar ends, and a hundred thoughts had a single effect.
To the furthest extent  when what is difficult for the living people is acted on [?], it is the exalted footprints of human relationships, and even when honourably dwelling in the yellow chamber, [one should?] wholly step in them.
Suppose then [one] admiringly clarifies and examines antiquity, and in unison steers Heaven and Man, emperors and kings craft and create, court and countryside conform with the measures, [those] who pour from the pot make use of houses, how dazzling are his literal compositions, and the living people within the seas altogether accepts the bestowal of ears and eyes.
By apply accordingly outstanding talent and great strategies, to be fond of and marvel at excellent scholars, to look on subordinates as if they were wounded, and labour oneself for the benefit of living beings, also [those who?] have not gotten it will then praise it. For he who was the warp and woof of Heaven and Earth, how empty is a posthumous title!
